Day 1 SFT, Kenosha to Vandalia, IL

Drove 347 miles today.

Went to Jo Ann’s grandparents home town of Paw Paw IL. Checked out the Wyoming Cemetery, did not find ancestors, tho there are some there someone. Then we got serious about heading south. Had lunch at Cindy’s on 34 in Mendota, homestyle standard fare, very tasty.

Then we saw this TALL man with an ice cream cone in his hand, and we could not pass him up. Krekel’s in Macon. Photo opportunity followed by a sweet treat, figuring we should “pay” for the bathroom privileges.

Next we made it to Vandalia, and saw and took photos at the Madonna of the Trail. Vandalia is the western terminus of the Cumberland Trail, from Maryland through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. There are madonnas in each of these states. It was also the first capital of the state of Illinois.

First Capitol 1836-1839, while A. Lincoln was in the state legislature.

We stayed in a very nice “8th Hole Air B&B” south side of town for the night (neat the golf course).
