Day 8: Completing L&C Trail

We crossed the river and we now in the Pacific Sceniç byway.
We saw trains on both sides of the river, at times ducking in and out of tunnels.
The scenery was beautiful along the river. Salmon or other fish must be running because we saw nets and a lot of fishing boats.
We noticed we could cross the Columbia at Bonneville so we did.

We stopped at the Bonneville Lock and Dam, went in because the visitor center was open. Fish ladders allowed the fish to swim upriver on the side of the locks.
The turbines and other parts of the self pguided tour were very good, but I think we best liked the viewing area where we watched all sizes of fish swim up the ladders. The fish zipping by the windows. They were huge and it was wonderful.

We had lunch at Rosie’s Diner in Woodward, WA.
Arriving at the Pacific Ocean overlook at 6:46 CT, with rain and fierce gale winds, we left whiny Bill Bison in the car and took our photos.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive center was closed. We headed back east and south, crossed back over to Oregon to Astoria, then headed to Fort Clatsop to the west where the expedition spent the second winter near the ocean. Alas, it was also closed. Covid-19 strikes again, and again.

So, total miles to coast of the Pacific ocean 3,233.9.

While in Washington state we noticed the mask wearing and distance rules were highly enforced and followed.

Total miles today 484 miles. Total miles so far 3403.

  1. Great going. Hope you are having fun. That is a neat area. The waterfalls are only 30 miles east of Portland.

    1. Having a great time. Love the scenery. No elk spotted yet. Wrong side of falls yesterday, hitting it first thing this morning.
