Day 7 SFT, In and Around Santa Fe

End of Santa Fe Trail

We made it! We arrived at the end of the Santa Fe trail?

It was a good day. It was windy and cool yet at the same time, sunny and nice.
First thing in Santa Fe is, we went to Loretto Chapel (built 1873) which has the Miraculous Stairway, supposedly made out of one piece of wood, to see that.

Next we went to the Plaza Cafe (since 1905) at the west side of the plaza for a very good breakfast. I had posole and it was excellent. Coming with the meal was a sopapilla. Yum!

We split ways after breakfast. Cousins scoped out many of the shops. I (Jo Ann) visited the New Mexico History Museum which also gave access to the Palace of the Governors, which I had visited 52 years earlier with my friend Yvette. Very little in this town looks the same to me. The museum covered 500 years of history, outstanding!

We drove south on hwy 14 to the small historic town of Cerrillos. This was a mining town on “the turquoise trail”. Unfortunately, the visitor center and museum were both closed. Once a bustling town, little going on now.

Five miles further south, we entered the tourist town of Madrid. This colorful town was packed with eclectic shops, bars, shops, restaurants, shops, both sides of highway for what seemed like a mile. Lots of action and tight, full parking.

We headed back “home” stopping for some groceries for dinner.
