July 12: Skagway

Here is our ship docked near the landslide. They sent us ashore on the tenders to a separate dock for smaller boats and to bring in cruisers. We actually went on tenders from another ship. There were 4 ships that day. They did allow a few special vehicles to take people on the dock, which seems mostly rebuilt, but the danger of future landslides looms.

Our excursion today was named “Best of Skagway, Rail, Salmon Bake and Saloon”.

Rail first, we boarded a bus to Fraser, Canada, saw many beautiful views along the way, including trains across the river.

After clearing customs in Fraser, Canada, we boarded a White Pass and Yukon Route train to head south. Our train car was named Lake Johns, car 332. Photos of station and train:

Feeling the air rush through my hair while I was on the platform between cars was amazing!

These were among the lovely views from the train, click to view large versions:

Tight Spots, railroad bed cut right into mountain sides in places:

Nice view of rushing river and crossing trestle from the train:

Exiting the train, we reboarded our bus. Next was the Salmon Bake and mock gold digger town of Liarsville, where we had a very good salmon bake, standard sides and cake. I can’t say much for the “play” and gold panning (I did not pan) and after all it was only in the 50s. Hard to imagine wearing those skimpy costumes all day. The quasi-historical buildings did hold good representative and some real artifacts (I think) that were interesting.

Last stop en route: Skagway Overlook:

Finally, the infamous Red Onion Saloon and Brothel with money holes in each room (pipes went to lower level to person in charge).

Walking around town I managed to get my National Parks Passport stamped. Here are the stamps:

By now I was more than ready to try some brew. I chose Whipsaw Spruce Ale and Dewey Dryhop (dry Hopped Blonde IPA) from Klondike Brewing Co., Skagway, AK. What a cute little delivery truck they had out front!

Onboard in the evening was a lively show/production, and I loved it!
