Days 7 and 8, Two Excursions or Not, New Year Cruise

Day 7, Belize City, we were supposed to have a long day excursion: “Xunantunich Mayan Ruins & Lunch“. Paula and I were worn out from the Roatan excursion. Also, I had come up mid-dinner last night with runny nose I was sure was from close encounters with Macaws and White-Faced Monkeys. I don’t think I could have carried enough tissues. So, we cancelled, and stayed on ship and rested up.

Day 8, Costa Maya (Mahahual) we had scheduled a tour: “Mayan Cultural Experience & Lunch” and it all began as planned. We walked down the pier to our line-up for the excursion. After a little while, they walked us to the bus area. There were many buses, however our bus was missing. (strike 1) After a phone call it was determined the schedule was changed without all parties having been informed. So, we waited there another half hour or more, and finally our bus arrived.
We were in the last slot, next to the standby ambulance. Upon pulling out, our bus mirror extension struck and ripped off and broke a red light on the side of the ambulance. (strike 2) Regardless, he proceeded carefully, and we were on our way!
The tour guide was terrific, and we were learning a lot about the history of the Mayans we were going to visit. After 20-25 minutes of driving, the driver got his attention to inform him that something mechanical was happening to the bus. (strike 3) We were miles from any communications signals. The decision was made to return to port, rather than risking being broken down and end up missing the Ruby as she left town. When we got close to town, the guide reported our issues. Since this is the busiest time of year with many buses already brought in from Cancun, there were no extras for us to board.

We took our time walking back to reboard the Ruby. We saw some lovely Flamingos.
